What the law requires and what testing involves
The Electricity At Work Regulations
These regulations place a legal responsibility on employers and employees, including self-employed people, to comply and take reasonably practicable steps to make sure no danger comes from using electrical equipment. In practice that means having a programme of inspection and electrical safety testing of portable appliances in place, carried out routinely by a competent person.
The Health and Safety at Work Act
This puts a duty of care on both employer and employee to ensure the safety of everyone using the premises, including where:
- Appliances are used by employees
- The public use electrical appliances, such as colleges, schools, hospitals, gyms, hotels and B&Bs
- Electrical appliances are supplied or hired
- Electrical appliances are repaired or serviced
What does testing involve?
Our engineers carry out PAT (increasingly referred to as EET) testing in line with the IEE Code of Practice and HSE guidelines. Every appliance gets a thorough visual check of its casing, flex and plug, looking for damage, wear, correct wiring and the right fuse rating.
Once an appliance passes its visual inspection, our engineer performs a series of electrical tests using a PAT testing unit. We test 240V, 110V and 415V equipment connected to the mains via a plug.
On completion, you receive a detailed test report and certificate confirming your equipment is safe to use.
Where we test
Offices, schools, factories, nurseries, nightclubs, cafes, hotels, hairdressers and barbers, landlords, gymnasiums: any premises that needs to comply with Health & Safety legislation.
Why it protects you
Insurers assume a business is complying with all necessary regulations when providing cover, and may refuse or reduce a claim for damage caused by an untested appliance. Regular PAT testing gives employers and landlords the evidence they need.
Certifications you can trust
Proud members of Patta, the Portable Appliance Testing Trade Association.
